Ever wondered what makes a disciplined person? Find out the importance and ways to instill discipline in your life starting today!
Today I want to delve a bit deeper and talk to you all about the importance of accepting full responsibility for every thought, action and circumstance in your life. This is the vital ingredient in that helps you take ownership of your life and achieve success in your fitness, personal and professional goals.
‘We cannot solve life’s problems except by solving them’. Sounds simple doesn’t it? This might seem glaringly obvious but is beyond comprehension for most of the population. This is because we must accept responsibility for a problem before gaining the power to solve it. It is impossible to solve a problem with the attitude, ‘it’s not my problem’. Problems cannot be solved by hoping someone else will solve them.
This world is filled with many who seek to avoid the pain of their problems by saying to themselves, “This problem was caused to me by other people or by social/life circumstances beyond my control, and hence it is up to other people or society to solve this issue for me. It isn’t my problem”.
By avoiding the responsibility of a problem or situation, we give up our RESPONSE-ABILITY and power to take the right decisions and corrective action. This in turn weakens us further. The reason we see so many people make new year resolutions to achieve fitness goals and not follow through is because deep down they do not want to assume responsibility for their actions, due to fear of failure, wherein failure to achieve their goal means the fault will lie with them in its entirety. Therefore it is much easier to blame a lack of support, time, the weather and a hundred other external factors for the failure and be void of the blame. Here is the catch though, the act of shifting the responsibility for failure doesn’t shun the guilt, disappointment and low self worth that comes with the act of not following through on your actions. Instead it makes you feel powerless and resentful toward external forces of which you actually had complete control of. This is best summarized by Scott Peck (author of the best-selling book – ‘The Road Less Travelled’), “The difficulty we have in accepting responsibility for our behavior lies in the desire to avoid the pain of the consequences of that behavior.”
Accepting responsibility means acknowledging that everything you have done in the past and what you are currently doing today is 100% your choice. You are the one choosing not to workout, you are the one choosing to eat that fast food meal, you are the one choosing to allow that injury stop you from moving forward. Everything is 100% your choice. Your family and friends are not to blame. They may not encourage you along the way or support your decisions, but they are not the ones making your decisions. You are the one responsible for making your decisions and the only one responsible for changing the decisions you have made in the past or currently.
If you are ready to take responsibility of what you have done in the past or what has happened in the past, then you will be able to let go of that with more ease. Once you are able to let that blame go, you are able to focus on the forward action. Obviously this is not an easy step, but one that needs to be confronted so that you can move forward.
Once you have been able to successfully let go of the blame, then you need to make sure that every step you have moving forward is 100% your decision and your responsibility. Of course we would like to have our family and friends on board, but your success is only your responsibility.
We can’t change our past; we can only accept it and move forward. There is no sense dwelling on what happened and how we got to where we are today. If you really want to finally achieve lifetime success with the health and fitness goals that you have been struggling with, then the time is NOW to step up and take responsibility. Accept the past, Accept who you are right now, and Accept the Responsibility of your actions moving forward! Do this and you will be successful in your Health and Fitness journey!
“The moment you take responsibility for everything in your life is the moment you can change anything in your life.” – Hal Elrod
