How to Learn Faster & Better

Today, I want to share a simple tip that will boost your learning capacity by 10x.

It turns out that a very simple way to learn more is by forcing your brain to engage with new information in the right way.

In a college experiment (http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/1…), researchers found that students who wrote notes by hand during lectures scored much higher on an exam compared to those using a computer.

When I first read about this finding, I was quite surprised.

We know that by using a computer it’s much easier to take notes, and you can take many more notes.

In this study, the students with a computer took very detailed notes, word by word, they could write down entire sentences.

And that was the issue. Students that used a computer didn’t engage with the content at all, they were merely transcribing lectures.

On the other hand, the students that were taking notes via handwriting, they were much slower, and they took a lot fewer notes.

And to take notes effectively they had to engage with the lecture and be able to understand what the professors were talking about so they could note down the key points.

So it turns out that one danger of automation and speed is that we sometimes forget to engage with the content which leads to very poor understanding.

And if we actually want to understand and learn something new it might be a good idea to think about it a lot more and try to phrase it in our own words instead of blindly memorizing words of others.
